Collage

  1. Hi Lindsey,

We missed you last Saturday. OK, so we are to VTS this work of art...

I see an apple, which makes me think that you are a teacher (or like fruit). The camera and glasses make me think that you're both creative and academic. You like children - either your own or your students - I'm assuming you teach at this point. The wood mannequin also seems to be a nod toward teaching, specifically art. Also, I wonder if you like to travel. The background seems very cool, almost like snow. Finally, I see something that looks like college flags. In summary, I think this collage is about you, your family, your interests, and your occupation.

  2. I see an apple with a bite out of it, this makes me think also of teaching but the bite to me feels like comfort, like you've been teaching for a while and really sink your teeth into it. The four frames with the paper and glasses also remind me of school and research, more academia and perhaps a lot of it. The figure in the center appears to be holding its hands up, it might be holding the world in its hands....or even juggling many things. It could maybe also be a gesture of surrender to all of it.... I imagine the figure as the central focal point and representational of the artist with all the surrounding images aspects of Lindsey's most immediate world. I believe the child is her son? Based on other things Ive seen in the blog. Maybe the costume represents elements of playfulness in her world. I see a camera in the upper left vicinity, it seems to have less emphasis than the academic photos perhaps and maybe it is an import part of Lindsey's life but it has taken a back seat right now while she juggles (the posture of the figure) all the rest of her world (the globe image), school (the lil school flags, family life, (photo of her child) teaching (the apple) and school, (paper/glasses images). The purple paint and textures in the back ground feel exploratory in nature. They have very specific marks and movement. Its like she is "making her mark"
All in all, a lot going on in this collage. :)

  3. My observations go right along with what Beth has to say...The repetition of the image of the glasses and paper suggest to me that studying might take up a lot of your time. The position of the figure suggests to me that you might be in a position of flux. The arrangement of the child, the camera, and the globe in relation to the position of the figures arms tell me that maybe you have a lot happening in your life right now – you’re working hard to juggle everything.

  4. I agree that the reated glasses along the left of the piece suggest study or possibly time and effort involved as a teacher, artist, and student.

I suspect that the central figure references you or your life which may seem off balance at times, but the paper strips connecting it to the young child's face in the lower right corner imply scaffolding as if he is supporting you and keeping you from falling.

The camera seems to reference photography, either as a passion, a content that you teach, or both. I agree that the apple seems to reference teaching; the globe perhaps a love of travel.

Finally, the handpainted background seems to reference artmaking.

  5. I'm agree with many of the above comments. When I saw the repeated glasses image I thought of the different ways we see..as an educator, artist, mother, woman. When we 'become' these different people we may see things in different ways. I also see a wooden doll in the center that I believe may represent the artist position of flexibility.

  6. The repetition of the classes makes me think of the misplacement of everyday things - where did I put my glasses? Right here, where did they go again? Just like car keys. The glasses also line up like the images on a proof sheet. Then I also notice the overlap of the camera onto the column of glasses. It could be a statement about seeing.

I think the apple overlapping the drawing mannequin signifies human knowledge. The mannequin can also be manipulated in multiple ways by others. I think that means you have a lot of responsibilities and duties in life, not all that you can control.

Perhaps the boy in the Stitch costume is your son, and he is out of this world.
